Business at mainland ports continued to improve last month with the Yangtze River Delta, especially Shanghaiy and Ningboy, faring better than Shenzhen in the Pearl River Delta, the South China Morning Post reported.

For the first time this year, cargo throughput at Shanghai, the world’s busiest container terminal, increased 5.8 percent year on year last month to 33.28 million tonnes, after eight months of decline, according to Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).

Container throughput at Shanghaiy, the world’s second-busiest container port, reached 2.22 million TEUs. It is the highest level this year and 1.6 percent higher than in August, according to Shanghai-listed SIPG.

However, Shanghaiy’s container throughput was down 5.6 percent year on year. Still, the figures were an improvement on the 15 percent year-on-year drop in the first eight months this year.

Container throughput at Ningboy, the fifth-busiest mainland cargo port, enjoyed a year-on-year increase of 9.4 percent to 1.05 million TEUs last month.

September was the first month that Ningboy had year-on-year growth in container throughput, in contrast to the decline in Shanghaiy and Shenzhen.

Container throughput in Shenzhen, the country’s second-busiest port, fell 11.96 percent to 1.77 million TEUs. Cargo throughput fell 6.7 percent to 17.84 million tonnes, in contrast to Shanghaiy’s growth.
