Hanjin Shipping and Wan Hai Lines are tightening ranks in the trans-Pacific by establishing a vessel-sharing agreement on Hanjin’s Vietnam-U.S. service and setting up a cross-charter arrangement on a second Hanjin loop.

Both arrangements, part of a service-sharing pattern many carriers have been implementing worldwide to reduce capacity and costs, will take effect in mid-March.

Wan Hai, based in Taiwan, will deploy one 4,000-TEU vessel and South Korea’s Hanjin will deploy five on the SJX (Southeast Asia-Japan Express) Service between Vietnam and the U.S., currently operated by Hanjin. The service will add Hong Kong to the port rotation to attract more cargo from South China.

The port rotation of the SJX service will be: Port Kelang, Malaysia; Singapore; Ho Chi Minh (Cai Mep), Vietnam; Hong Kong; Yantian, China; Osaka; Tokyo; Long Beach; Oakland; Tokyo; Osaka; Hong Kong.

Wan Hai said the other agreement, a cross-charter arrangement with Hanjin on its PSX (Pacific Express) service, would provide shippers with additional service coverage. The PSX calls Yantian; Kaohsiungy, Taiwan; Shanghaiy; Kwangyangy, South Korea; Pusany; Long Beachy; Oaklandy; Seattley; and Pusany.

The two carriers said they will continue to seek new opportunities to cooperate in order to provide their customers with better service.
