Vizag Port strike continues, no progress in talks
-
The strike by workers of the cargo handling department of the Visakhapatnam port continued for the second day on Friday and there was no headway in the talks with the management, according to a press release issued by the port authorities on Friday.
The Assistant Labour Commissioner initiated conciliation proceedings
and talks were held on Friday, but they proved to be inconclusive. The
next hearing would be on November 23, according to the press release. At
present, 18 vessels are in the harbour and cargo handling operations
have not been affected by the strike, adds the release, as alternative
arrangements have been made. The workers are on strike opposing the
implementation of the National Industrial Tribunal Award on manning
scales. The port authorities have rebutted the charge of the unions
that the performance of the port is affected by the implementation of
manning scales. Till date during November, according to the release,
the port handled 33.78 lakh tonnes (lt) of cargo against 30.44 lt last
year during the corresponding period, and this disproves the contention
of the workers.Further, during the current financial year the port
handled 419.84 lt till date against 411.99 lt during the corresponding
period last year. Therefore, there was no adverse impact on the
performance of the port as alleged by the unions.Source: The Hindu Business Line
