Shanghai’s container throughput this year may drop 14 percent from 2008, a government official said yesterday. The city’s container throughput in 2009 will be about 24 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) according to a preliminary estimate by the port authority,

lower than last year’s 28 million TEUs, Wang Hongquan, vice director of
Shanghai Transport and Port Authority, said at a conference.

He didn’t provide figures for dry bulk throughput.

Container throughput in the first 11 months this year is 22.6 million
TEUs, down 12.28 percent from the same period last year, according to
the statistics by Shanghai International Port Group.

The port handled a total of 296 million tons of dry bulk goods in the first 11 months, down 14 percent from a year ago.

Shanghai was the world’s second-busiest container port in 2008, behind rival Singapore’s 29.9 million TEUs.

Latest statistics from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore
pegged box throughput in the first 11 months for the island state at
23.6 million TEUs, down 15 percent year on year.

Wang also said that Waigaoqiao Port will complete the conversion of its
180 cranes from diesel to electric power by the end of the year to
reduce emissions.
