Port Expansion sets the standard

  • In an article published on its website yesterday, engineering contractor Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) said the success of the Dampier Port expansion had set new international benchmarks for project delivery.

The $1.4 billion upgrade project was one of the largest port expansions in Australia in recent times.

Dampier Port is a key iron ore export terminal in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

SKM was appointed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore to carry out Engineering,
Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) on all stages of the
project, from initial studies through to commissioning.

In the article, ‘Creating an EPCM Project Delivery Blueprint,’ SKM
project manager Anthony Radici has outlined how this project has
influenced the design and implementation of other significant port
    developments.

“Completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety
record, the project illustrates how successful project delivery is
dependent on a range of elements working together,” he said.

“One of the major challenges of the project involved expanding the
port’s capacity without affecting its operations at a time of
    unprecedented demand for iron ore.

“The port remained fully operational throughout construction and
achieved record yearly export tonnages over periods of the project.”

According to Radici, the team decided to dramatically increase the
capacity of the iron ore export facility by duplicating the port’s
original single process stream with a parallel stream.

They completed the parallel stream in the first construction phase and
replace the original in the second phase of the project, he said.

The article summarises the way SKM managed different aspects of the
project, including organisation, health and safety, engineering,
    shutdown planning procedures and sustainability.
