New bunker tanker in operation
-
New Zealand’s new bunker tanker has been making deliveries after repairs to a faulty pump. “It is fully operational and we have made five bunker deliveries since the middle of last week,”
said a source quoted by the Platts news service on Thursday.
The $20 million Awanuia is owned by Seafuels, a joint venture between
Ports of Auckland and Pacific Basin Shipping. The tanker is under time
charter to Shell New Zealand. The 80-metre, 3,900 metric tonne double-hull tanker arrived in New Zealand in August, having sailed from a shipyard in Turkey.
A mechanical problem, discovered last month as the Awanuia was loading
its first cargo of fuel from New Zealand’s Marsden Point refinery,
delayed its deployment.Reports at the time said one of four drive unit pumps in tanker’s engine room needed repairs.
The arrival of the Awanuia will allow the closure of Auckland’s aging Wynyard’s Wharf tank farm.
It also means that Shell New Zealand will be able to offer 380 centistokes (cSt) product in the port.
Until now, limited space at the Wynyard’s tank farm has meant only 180 cSt intermediate fuel oil (IFO) was available.
Sources say the Awanuia’s eight storage tanks mean it can hold both grades of IFO, as well as marine distillates.
The tanker will primarily be used to bunker cruise ships and commercial vessels calling at Auckland.
