India imported 1.4 million t of coal in September S. Africa

  • India imported 1.4 million tonnes of coal from South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal in September, up from 1.3 million in August. India has been the biggest single buyer of South African coal throughout this year,

    having taken 22-35 percent of monthly exports. India’s absorption of
    around one-third of South Africa’s exports has been the main reason
    prices in oversupplied Europe have not collapsed.

    From January to end-September India lifted 13 million tonnes of South African coal, 34 percent of the exports to date.

    South Africa is expected to export around 60 million tonnes in 2009, down from 67 million in 2008.
