Hamburg Sud draw Tilbury to Felixstowe on UKEI Service

Shipping News | December 15, 2009 | View Comments
  • A delegation from the port of Tilbury visited Israel recently aiming to convince Zim Integrated Shipping Co. to call at Tilbury rather than Felixstowe. It is now understood that the driving force behind the visit was the German shipping company Hamburg Sud which uses the? Port of Tilbury as one of its main European hubs, mainly serving Central and South American shipping services.

Felixstowe is one of Zim’s UK gateways and has served the port for more
than 20 years. Its longest established service -? JOS (known also as
UKEI service) to the Eastern Mediterranean offers a fixed day weekly
service to Limassol, Alexandria, Ashdod and Haifa.

Mr. Yoram Hoffman, Managing Directorof A.M.A. Associated Maritime
Agencies Ltd. Hamburg Sud’s Israeli Agent, noted that the port of
Tilbury is located on the River Thames, adjacent to the M25 London
orbital motorway, and less than 30 miles from the centre of London, it
is the closest container terminal to the UK largest market area. It
also has its own dedicated rail and feeder links to all major
commercial centers in the UK and beyond.

Hoffman added that the? Port of Tilbury has modern cold storage
facilities which enables Israeli fresh produce exporters to store goods
at relatively low cost while Felixstowe has no such facility.
