Flash strike hits iron ore handling at Chennai

Shipping News | December 1, 2009 | View Comments
  • Iron ore handling at the Chennai Port has come to a standstill for a whole day following a flash strike called by workers in the Ore Handling Section (OHS) on Monday.

However, timely intervention by the Chennai Port Trust management and
its chairman Capt Subhash Kumar made a breakthrough in negotiations and
the workers called of their strike by evening.

According to sources, the ‘spontaneous agitation’ by the workers
engaged in ore handling at the port began from the first shift (6 a.m.)
after the trust effected a mass transfer of their colleagues to fall in
line with the Central Vigilance Commission order of moving those
completed three years in same posting.

Since most of them were working there for more than two decades, the
transfer order did not go well with the workers who resorted to a flash
    strike.

On instructions from the Trust’s chairman, who was on a Delhi tour,
senior officials held a series of discussions with the striking
employees throughout the day. By evening, breakthrough was reached when
the Trust management announced that the transfers would be put on hold
and the same employees would be allowed to continue at OHS.
