The risk of explosion at the Riga Port, which could cause a chemical disaster at the port, has been averted, as Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) announced at a press conference at 12 noon. Therefore, all traffic restrictions in Riga and in the Daugava River have been lifted; residents who were evacuated from their homes can now return, writes LETA.
As reported, the chemical substance that leaked from a container in
Kundzinsala was acetone cyanohydrin, an extremely hazardous substance.
The chemical substance that could explode due to high temperature has
already been pumped out of faulty containers into safe containers.
Even though the accident occurred in the nighttime hours, the first,
and very brief public statement about it was only made at 7:30 a.m.
