Chinese Box volume signal recovery
-
Container throughput at many Chinese ports showed some positive signs of recovery in August, with a large number of ports recording their highest monthly volumes for the year, according to Paris consultant Alphaliner.
Although most major ports are still recording lower volumes compared to
the year before, the volume declines have slowed and some ports are
beginning to show some signs of positive growth. The total volume for the top 10 Chinese container ports declined at its
lowest rate for the year in August, at -3.3 percent, lower than the 9.3
percent decline seen year to date. The volume recovery was led by ports in South China, with the three
main ports of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou all recording positive
volume recovery since the lows seen in February. Some of the increase
can be attributed to the peak season cargo rush typically seen in
August, Alphaliner said.Among the top 10 Chinese ports, the four that recorded positive growth
for the year to date through August compared to the same period last
year were Qingdao (up 2 percent), Tianjin (up 2.8 percent) Liaungang
(up 1.5 percent) and Yingkou (up 25.7 percent). Dalian’s volumes were
flat for the first eight months.Throughput at the three biggest Chinese ports still recorded declines
for the year-to-date through August, though, with Shanghai volumes down
14.6 percent, Shenzhen down 20.4 percent and Hong Kong down 16.2
percent.Source: Journal of Commerce
