Xinjiang to reach 226 million tons of annual coal production

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has abundant coal resources, is planning to boost its coal production capacity by launching 139 large and medium-sized coal mines by 2010, the Coal Industry Administration of Xinjiang said on Sunday.
The 139 projects approved by the regional government of Xinjiang are
expected to raise the city’s annual coal production to 226 million tons
after all the projects gradually launch full operation. The projects
will be located at 65 sites in Xinjiang’s four largest coal mining
bases. In order to accelerate Xinjiang’s coal exploration, China has
invested a large amount of money in transporting coal from west to east
and in transmitting power from west to east. Many large enterprises
also invest heavily in coal power generation.Xinjiang has an estimated 2.19 trillion tons of coal, accounting for
40% of China’s total reserves. The proven coal reserves in Xinjiang had
reached 199.2 billion tons as of the end of 2008. Xinjiang produced
nearly 67.7 million tons of coal in 2008 and is expected to produce 80
million tons this year and 100 million tons in 2010.Source: China Knowledge
