Petronet LNG may more Qatar Gas As of 2 January

Freight News | January 1, 2010 | View Comments
  • Petronet LNG Ltd., India’s biggest buyer of liquefied natural gas, may receive additional cargoes of the fuel from Qatar starting on Jan. 2 as the South Asian nation seeks to bridge shortages.

Petronet may get 10 cargoes from Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Co.
every month starting in January compared with eight a month currently,
Amitava Sengupta, executive director of finance at the New Delhi-based
company, said today. The additional cargoes would increase contracted
volumes by 2.5 million metric tons a year to 7.5 million, he said by
    telephone.

The LNG importer doubled the annual capacity of its terminal this year
to 10 million tons and may boost capacity to 15 million by 2012 to meet
demand from fertilizer makers and power stations. The first additional
cargo of about 90 million cubic meters may arrive at Dahej terminal in
the western state of Gujarat this weekend, Sengupta said.

The importer is in talks with Qatar, the world’s biggest LNG producer,
for a further 3.5 million tons a year, according to Sengupta. That’s
part of the additional 5 million tons a year sought by Indian state oil
    companies including GAIL India Ltd.

Petronet is currently building a 2.5 million ton-a-year terminal in
southern Kerala state after agreeing to buy 1.5 million tons of LNG
annually for 20 years from Australia’s Gorgon project.

The company’s shares gained 0.6 percent to 72.95 rupees in Mumbai
trading at 10:48 a.m. local time today compared with the 1 percent gain
in the benchmark Sensitive Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange.
