  • French oil major Total said the Itau gas field, located in the southern Bolivian province of Tarija, was ready to start production, with daily output estimated at 1.4 million cubic meters. A certificate of commercial viability for Itau was submitted to energy officials on July 31,

opening the way for the field to begin producing gas, Total said.
“Production from this field will be transported via the existing
infrastructure from the adjacent San Alberto field, which is operated
by Petrobras,” the French oil company said.
The start-up of the first phase of production from the field, in which
Total holds a 75 percent stake, is scheduled for mid-2010.
The Itau field was found in 1999 in West Tarija Block 20, which holds
“large reserves of gas and condensates” in the Huamampampa, Icla and
Santa Rosa reservoirs in southern Bolivia, Total said.
Total, which has been operating in the Andean nation since 1996, also
has a 15 percent interest in the San Alberto and San Antonio fields,
which mainly produce gas for export to the Brazilian market.
The French oil company, moreover, found the Incahuasi gas field,
located in an area between the southeastern province of Chuquisaca and
the eastern province of Santa Cruz in 2004.
Total has an 80 percent operating stake in Incahuasi.
