Iran tried to import gas from Azerbaijan
-
Iran is seeking to strike a deal with the Republic of Azerbaijan to import gas supplies from the Central Asian country on the basis of annual agreements, an Iranian official announced on Sunday.
“Next week, We will strive to place on our agenda negotiations on the
finalization of an annual agreement to come closer to final results
while conducting a study over the infrastructures required for
transferring gas from that country to Iran,” Managing Director of the
National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) Seyed Reza Kassaeizadeh
told.Referring to some media reports that a lack of prepared
facilities for gas transfer to Iran has made the Azeri side unable to
keep its word on the gas deal with Tehran, Kassaeizadeh said, “These
issues have been raised merely by the Azeri side, yet Iran is seriously
seeking gas imports from Azerbaijan on the basis of its timeline.”Tehran and Baku signed a memorandum of understanding on the transfer of gas supplies to Iran from 2010.
“More
than 500 million cubic meters of gas per year are planned to be
supplied within the memorandum with an opportunity to increase
supplies,” said the head of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan
(SOCAR), Rovnag Abdullayev. The MoU was signed between SOCAR and
Iran’s National Gas Company, he said, adding that the volume of gas
transferred would depend on the state of gas infrastructure connecting
the two countries in the initial stage. The contract to supply gas to Iran is expected to be officially signed by late 2009, Abdullayev said.
Azerbaijan
currently exports gas to Turkey and Georgia but Baku owns the necessary
infrastructure to export its gas to Iran and Russia as well.Azerbaijan
and Iran are connected via the Kazi-Magomed-Astara gas pipeline which
has the capacity to transfer 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year.Source: Fars News
