Denmark: Shipyard workers strike on the anniversary

Freight News | November 24, 2009 | View Comments
  • All hourly-waged workers at the Lindo shipyard put down their tools and went on strike this morning in protest that the shipyard’s owner, A. P. Moller Maersk,

used a state loan to build ships in Asia rather than at the financially-troubled Funen location.

Maersk received a 2.6 billion kroner loan under the export loan scheme
of the government’s Bank Package II. But the shipyard has been losing
millions for Maersk in recent years and the company has moved much of
its shipbuilding to Asia, where costs are far cheaper.

The strike came as the shipyard celebrates its 50th anniversary, but will soon closes due to recent financial troubles.

‘We don’t have a lot of money and we don’t think it’s the right time
for festivities, so everyone got a pastry and soda to mark the day,’
said shipyard CEO Peter Jann Nielsen to Fyens Stiftistidende newspaper.
