China to eliminate small iron and steel companies

Freight News | December 17, 2009 | View Comments
  • The Chinese government yesterday released a draft of a policy outlining plans to eliminate small steel firms with a capacity less than 1 million tons per year.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said it will
also raise environmental standards on steel mills, forcing them to
upgrade their equipment or have their licenses revoked. The policy will
prohibit mills from using more than 92 kg of coal and 6 tons of water
for each ton of steel produced. It will also limit waste water
emissions to 2 cubic meters and sulphur-dioxide emissions to 1.8 kg per
    ton of steel produced.

The ministry said that the steel industry is producing too much steel
because of the government’s stimulus package, and that the proposals
will help to step up the campaign to eliminate excess capacity in the
    sector.
