NAVIMETEOSAT, A NEW INNOVATIVE WEATHER TRACKING SERVICE BY NAVIMETEO
NavimeteoSat, a new service launched by Navimeteo for their clients has been developed for boat/yacht captains along the routes of the Mediterranean Sea and the Ocean to receive PERSONALISED MARINE WEATHER INFORMATION aboard sent by Navimeteo Centre, thanks to satellite communication technology, even when sailing offshore.
NavimeteoSat project saw the co-operation at International level between Navimeteo that boast many years’ experience in the field of marine weather services for captains and harbours, running their operations from Chiavari Marine Tower, EMA, a Slovenian company that dealt with the development of the geo-locator and satellite transceiver system, San Giorgio S.E.I.N., an Italian company based in Genoa that design and manufacture naval instruments and Iridium, an important satellite communication network.
The system has a global coverage and allows the marine weather forecaster, as if he were onboard, to know the boat/yacht position, course and speed automatically. Therefore, the forecaster is able to promptly inform the captain on any weather changes en-route.
The weather information and warnings are transmitted by the Navimeteo Forecasting Centre through short textual messages. NavimeteoSat requires the installation of a satellite transponder connected to a small display, where the captain can read the weather warning messages sent to him by the forecasters.
Because the system is bi-directional, the captain can let the forecaster know any problem concerning safety which will then be forward to the competent Public Marine Authorities by Navimeteo.
In this situation, the knowledge of the exact co-ordinates of the unit; this is a very important information for captains’ safety. Therefore, besides providing support for the choice of the most favourable route, Navimeteo help ensure safer navigation.
The NavimeteoSat innovation has been presented during the last Open Day organized in Milan at the Touring Club Italiano by Centro Velico Caprera (CVC), the largest and most famous Italian sailing school, whose sailing boats used for long-range navigation will be equipped with the system.
